Driving Instructor Training To become a driving instructor you must meet the following Driving Standards Agency (DSA) requirements. You must,
1. have held a licence full licence for at least three years,
2. be able to read a number plate where the letters are 79.44mm from 27.5 m (90 ft),
3. be a fit and proper person to have your name entered onto the official
driving instructor register (ADI). All convictions including motoring offences
still in force, may be taken into account when assessing your suitability,
4. pass the compulsory three part examinations.
Exams There are 3 tests that you will also
be required to pass:
- Part 1 A theory test conducted at one of the DSA
test centres throughout the UK. 100 multiple choice questions, a pass mark of
85% is needed. You have 1 1/2 hours to complete,
- Part 2 Practical driving test conducted from one of the DSA test centres. This requires a very high standard of driving, and lasts about 1 hour. You are
allowed a maximum of 6 minor faults,
- Part 3 Test of instructional ability which involves role play by the examiner as two different pupils (designed to be similar to real driving
lessons). Again taken with a DSA examiner from one of the test centres. A very
high standard of instruction must be demonstrated to qualify (clarity and
correctness is vital). The test lasts approximately 1 hour.
After you have completed and passed the above tests, you will have qualified to become a driving instructor. You can expect average earnings of £630 for working 35 x 1-hour driving lessons (less all expenses).
Need Help with Your Training? We, at DLBS,
can help you become a driving instructor, we can
arrange driving instructor training and a driving instructor course. We have
qualified driving instructor training staff throughout the UK.
The three parts to your driving instructor training are explained above.
- Part 2 of your driving ability will require you to have driving lessons probably in the region of 5 to 10 hours. This should bring your driving up to the required standard --you need to demonstrate this on test day,
- Part 3 of your driving instructor course is the difficult one, you will need to have at least 40 hours training (a DSA requirement) signed off by your trainer. This is because on test day you will need to demonstrate a high standard of instruction to the examiner. If you can do this you will have completed your driving instructors training and became a qualified driving instructor.
Next step is to decide if you want to start your own driving school or work through an established school. You will need to give this some deep thought eg. can you generate enough pupils on your own?
One option you will have as an instructor will be to register with us at www.dlbs.co.uk We should be able to supply you with pupils or we may be able to place you with a driving school who need instructors.
If you go with a driving school you will probably
pay a franchise fee which covers your supply of pupils and probably material you
will need for pupils. Don't get caught in the trap of going with one of the large
national companies, you will end up paying extortionate franchise fees and also
probably paying for each pupil they supply you.
Other things to think of are 'do you have your own dual control car?' Remember, pupils don't want to learn in an old tatty car with an L plate stuck front and back,
they are paying for and expect a professional service ie. clean modern car with headboard etc.
